Hollywood Sign

Music & Lyrics by Becky Reyes

Hollywood Sign was also written while I was in the Finger Lakes. I left Los Angeles in 1985 and ended up in a little cabin in western New York State.

My little cabin

Sittin’ on a stump with a buddy of mine
Far away from the Hollywood sign
Tellin’ him the difference it has made so fine
Far away from the Hollywood sign
Far away from the Hollywood sign

I grew up east of the City of Angels
Near a freeway and a railroad track
Eatin’ mass production from the bakery
An eighth of an acre in a housing tract
A quarter million’s too much for that

But I spent my summers in south AZ
All my cousins and me and my family
Runnin’ through the desert and a-chasin’ a dream
Ask a lot of questions on my grandpa’s knee
But summers would end and that dream would leave

Back in the city get to work by eight
The traffic report says enjoy the wait
An hour for lunch at your favorite café
Right next door almost every day
You put in your hours and collect your pay

The apples we ate had a waxy shine
If the birds wouldn’t touch them then why should I?
Always made sure we were locked up tight
Never walked alone in the city at night
Avoided the towns where the gangs would fight

But I couldn’t stop thinking ‘bout another life
Where the seasons change and the air is light
How in the hell did I ever survive?
I packed my bags and I said goodbye
I left LA when I was twenty five

I came to the country with a dream in my head
I have a little cabin and a garden bed
I pick on my flat-top and I sing with my friends
I sing Hallelujah I’m alive again
Hallelujah I’m alive again

Sittin’ on a stump with a buddy of mine
Far away from the Hollywood sign
Tellin’ him the difference it has made so fine
Far away from the Hollywood sign
Far away from the Hollywood sign
