Mary's Room

This song is a scratch track and doesn't represent the final version from our CD. It is about my dear friend, Mary Wilkes from Mitchellsville, NY. It is also the first song I ever wrote and finished. Mary was one of the first friends I made when I moved to the Finger Lakes area. I haven't seen her in over a dozen years, but we still talk frequently.
Mary's Room
We’re sharing secrets up in Mary’s room
The snow has chilled this winter afternoon
She stoked the fire and the coffee’s hot
She draws the curtains and begins to talk
She sadly smiles and says, “I wish I’d gone
To California, and I know I’m wrong
And I’m so glad he loves my boy and me
That I sometimes forget about where I could be”
“The winters get me down but I don’t mind
My friends and family, they keep me alive”
And in the looking glass I see a face
That reflects the longing for another place
We’re sharing secrets up in Mary’s room
The snow has chilled this winter afternoon
She stoked the fire and the coffee’s hot
She turns the radio down and starts to talk
“I’ve been in Mitchellsville a long, long time
I know ‘most everyone around these lines
And San Francisco’s just too far from here
And it hurts him to know that I wish I were there”
“I know my wishin’ gets my baby down
I know the Bay will always be around”
And in the looking glass I see a face
That reflects the longing for another place
“I know my wishin’ makes my baby blue
So I don’t tell him things I say to you”
And in the looking glass I see a face
That reflects the longing for another place
