Becky Reyes: Home
Hi Everyone,
Long welcome letter here so if you want to find out about where we're playing this month, the first couple of paragraphs is all you need to read. The rest is just good stuff I wanted to share with you (please excuse any typo's).
First of all, I want to say that it's officially the "slow" season here in southeastern AZ. I was thinking about you guys in your summer digs. We miss you! And for those of you who are fighting flooding, I'm doing my meditations and saying my prayers, thinking of you and wishing you the absolute best conditions for recovery.
Scott and I will be at Stables Restaurant at Tubac Golf Resort http://www.tubacgolfresort.com/ every weekend this July. For those of you year 'rounders, you're practically guaranteed a seat and if it gets too hot, we can play in the bar. We had a really comfortable, wonderful night last weekend. Everyone who was there was there to hear us! It was one of those magical evenings when there's a great crowd, great rapport and I actually played a bunch of my songs! By request! And the new one, Time is a Healer, is getting guffaws. I love that! You get me! You really do!!!
A couple of highlights this month that I have to share with you:
A few of weeks ago, during a very slow night, we played for a pair of women from out of town. They stayed and listened for a while. One of them was celebrating her birthday and they had both just had a wonderful, relaxing afternoon. They left for a little while, then came back again toward the end of the evening and stayed until it was time to pack up. We got to talking with them, and I gave one of them a scratch track CD, as it was her birthday. We talked music and I prattled on and on about all the music business (emphasis on "business") stuff that I know (which is really next to nothing). I wish I had kept my mouth shut and turned my ears on. Finally, one of the women blurted out, "Do you know who she is, who you're talking to? This is Jessi Colter!"
AAAaaaaahhhhh! Ms. Colter smiled a bit and said, "Oh, she probably doesn't know..."
But yes, I do know Jessi Colter. She was the only gold record holder at the time (OK I DID google her) of the now famous, movement starting "Wanted! The Outlaws" album. Yup, that's the one with Waylon Jennings (her husband), Willie Neslon and Tompall Glaser. I had that album, my dad had that album, every one I know had that album. And she wrote "I'm Not Lisa"! Have you ever helped nurse a broken soul who had long ago loved someone else so hard?
Anyway, Jessi Colter! And a week later, I found that she even signed my book. Life is good. Look her up http://www.officialjessicolter.com/! She's still making music, better than ever!
The CD is nearly finished. We are anticipating the CD being finished and ready to go by the end of July. We will release it early, but the official CD release parties (one in Bisbee and one in Tubac) will be in October when it's cooler... and drier. I'm trying not to play with it too much. I want the CD to reflect what we do on Saturday nights at Stables in Tubac. I wish that we had been able to actually get it together enough to record live sessions at Stables. Maybe the next one. In the meantime, if you want to hear any of my songs, I've got a few posted on my website http://www.beckyreyes.com/.
Speaking of my website, I have disabled my guestbook and I'm sad about this because I love your comments! But there are some people in this world who just want to post garbage. I've received guest comments (with links!) about, among other things, Viagra, sex with virgins, sex with teens, sex abroad, sex, sex, sex, and more sex, and one marriage proposal! So to thwart these guys, I've just disabled my guest book. But you can always come to our show and write in our little hard cover guest book (yes, I DO read it). Like I said, I love your comments! And you can always e-mail me at music@beckyreyes.com. And if I do publish your comments or your names on my newsletter or website, you'll notice I don't publish full names without your permission (your privacy really is very important to me).
I am working with the folks at Turquoise Valley Golf http://www.turquoisevalley.com/ in Naco, AZ near Bisbee on creating a little scene out there (well, they already have a nice little scene out there -- we want to make a BIG scene). I'm so happy that Pete Campbell asked me to do this. I love these guys! The Bisbee area is filled with great poets, musicians, artists. Our little town is brimming with talent (folk, jazz, blues, Latin, rock, soul, big band, Klezmer, you name it) and Turquoise Valley has opened their doors to us. Let's just see what happens when our little garden starts to bloom. I can't wait to introduce you to the rest of the gang here in our little neck of the woods.
We are very interested in playing on Fridays and Sundays. We've been in contact with Trivetti's Italian Restaurant and Piano Bar in Green Valley. It's beautiful and clean and reminds me a bit of those old nightclubs with the half-moon booths. Bob Trivett was very nice and interested in having us there. We checked out the patio and it looks like we could make our acoustic show work out there. There is also the matter of the piano bar. There's a baby grand and I know a wonderful player who's considering playing with me doing just jazz standards. I really need something to feed my inner torch singer. Anyway, we talk again with Bob Trivett this week sometime. Trivetti's does music 4 nights a week during season. I sure would like to have one of those nights. We also checked out the Anza Market (well, not the market, but the little café next door) in Tubac, Mayan Mexican Bistro, Torres Blancas, The Grill on the Green ("I don't think we have the room here for you") in Green Valley, and the Westward Look Resort and Spa (sending a promo pack this week) in Tucson. I'll keep you posted.
Thank you all so much for your interest and for suggesting these places. And a special, BIG THANK YOU goes out to Lynnea for taking a Sunday afternoon and showing us around Green Valley, and CC for joining us for dinner and giving us the skinny on possible places to perform.
July 5th is a Saturday. It's the day before my 50th! It is also the anniversary of Kari and Tom, Diane A's birthday, and the day after the
fourth. I'm hoping we'll have the patio to ourselves and that it's a cool dry day (uh, yeah...). If not, we'll meet in the bar and crank that air conditioner... Come out and celebrate with us! -B
